Particle vs. Head & Shoulders: Which Shampoo Is Better for Thicker, Fuller-Looking Hair?

I’ve tried a lot of shampoos over the years. Some for dry scalp. Some for thinning. Some because they were on sale and sitting at eye level in the drugstore aisle.

For a long time, Head & Shoulders was my default. It’s familiar, it’s everywhere, and it does what it says when it comes to dandruff.

But as I’ve gotten older, my priorities have shifted; I’m not just thinking about flakes anymore. I’m thinking about thickness. Density. That subtle widening at the temples that seems to creep up on you. So I decided to put Head & Shoulders up against Particle Hair Thickening Shampoo and see which one actually earns a permanent spot in my shower.

Here’s how it shook out.

If You Want Thicker, Fuller-Looking Hair… Particle

This was the big one for me.

Particle is specifically formulated to increase hair thickness and overall volume. It supports hair follicle activity with Capixyl and Redensyl, and it’s designed to improve the appearance of density, especially in areas like the temples and crown.

After a few weeks of using Particle, my hair looked fuller. Not in a gimmicky, over-styled way. It just had more presence. Less scalp peeking through under bright bathroom lights.

Head & Shoulders, on the other hand, keeps my scalp clean but does not claim to thicken or support follicle activity. It solves one problem. Particle tackles the one I actually care about right now.

If You Want Stronger Roots and Less Breakage… Particle

As someone who runs his hands through his hair while editing videos, I notice shedding. A lot.

Particle is designed to strengthen roots to reduce breakage and shedding. That focus on resilience stood out to me. My hair feels stronger when I rinse it out. It’s less fragile and more substantial.

Head & Shoulders cleans effectively, but it is not positioned around strengthening roots or promoting healthier-looking growth over time. Its primary focus is to combat dandruff, not hair strengthening.

For where I am in life, strength matters just as much as style.

If You Care About What’s Actually In Your Shampoo… Particle

I’ve become more ingredient-conscious over the years. Not obsessive, just aware.

Particle is SLS-, salt-, and paraben-free, which means it cleans without stripping. It also supports scalp health with ingredients like ginseng and green tea.

That combination hits the sweet spot for me. It gives me a clean scalp, nourished roots, and a natural texture.

Head & Shoulders has always felt a bit more medicinal. It does the job, but sometimes my hair feels slightly stripped afterward. When I am styling for a shoot, I prefer a shampoo that leaves my hair feeling balanced, not squeaky.

If You’re Focused Purely on Dandruff Control… Head & Shoulders

I’ll give credit where it’s due.

Head & Shoulders has built its name around fighting flakes. If dandruff is your primary concern and thickness is not on your radar, it absolutely delivers.

Particle is more about thickness, density, and overall hair health. It is not positioned as a medicated anti-dandruff shampoo.

So in this category, Head & Shoulders holds its ground.

If You Want Hair That Looks Healthier Over Time… Particle

What ultimately sold me on Particle is that it feels forward-thinking.

It promotes healthier-looking growth over time and leaves hair feeling stronger, fuller, and more resilient. That aligns with where I am as a Gen X guy. I am not trying to rewind the clock; I just want to look like I take care of myself.

After consistent use, my hair has more body when I style it. It sits better on camera. It even feels thicker between my fingers.

Head & Shoulders maintains. Particle builds.

Particle Is The Upgrade My Hair Actually Needed

Head & Shoulders is dependable. It is the shampoo I used when flakes were my main issue.

But Particle Hair Thickening Shampoo speaks to what I actually need now: more thickness, stronger roots, better scalp support, and hair that looks fuller at the temples and crown.

For me, that makes the decision simple. Particle stays in the shower.
